Garter stall plate of Sir John Grey KG
He was the son and heir of Reynold, 3rd Baron Grey of Ruthin. This fine and large plate
represents a black banner with gilded staff and golden fringe, charges with the Knight's
armorial ensigns. The arms are: Quarterly, 1st and 4th, Barry of six Argent and Azure in
chief three Roundels Gules (for Grey); 2nd and 3rd, sub-quarterly, i and iii, Or a Maunch
Gules (for Hastings); ii and iii, Barry Argent and Azure an Orle of Martlets Gules (for de
Valence). The silver helm is garnished with black and gold and covered with a gold mantle
with ermine lining, surmounted by a splendid crest in the form of upon a Cap of Estate Gules
turned up Ermine a Wyvern Or. Both the arms and crest are differenced by a silver label.

On the death of the 4th Marquess of Hastings, 21st Baron Grey of Ruthin, etc., his titles created by patent (i.e. the Marquessate of Hastings, the Earldoms of Moira and Rawdon, the Viscountcy of Loudoun and the two Baronies of Rawdon) became extinct, his Scottish titles (i,e, the Earldom of Loudoun and the Lordships of Campbell of Loudoun and of Tarrinzean and Mauchline) passed to his eldest sister and heir of line, and his six English Baronies in fee (i.e. Grey of Ruthin, Botreaux, Hungerford, de Moleyns, Hastings de Hastings and Hastings de Hungerford) fell into abeyance between his four sisters and co-heiresses.
On 29 Dec 1885 the abeyance of the Barony of Grey of Ruthin was terminated in favour Lady Bertha Lelgarde Rawdon-Hastings, sister and co-heiress of Henry Weysford Charles Plantagenet [Rawdon-Hastings], 4th Marquess of Hastings, 21st Baron Grey of Ruthin, etc., and second daughter of Hon Barbara Yelverton, suo jure Baroness Grey of Ruthin:
