On his death the Dukedom of Norfolk and the Earldoms of Nottingham, Surrey and Warenne became extinct. He was succeeded in the Earldom of Norfolk and the Baronies of Mowbray and Segrave by his only child, Lady Anne Mowbray, later wife of Richard [Plantagenet], 1st Duke of York, 2nd son of King Edward IV, who on 12 Jun 1476 was created Earl of Nottingham and on 7 Feb 1476/7 Earl of Warenne and Duke of Norfolk. On the death of Lady Anne in 1481 the Earldom of Norfolk became dormant if not extinct and the Baronies of Mowbray and Segrave fell into abeyance between the descendants of her great-great-aunts.
