The Barony of Clifford was held by the Earls of Cumberland from 18 Jun 1525 until 30 Oct 1605, when on the death of George [Clifford], 3rd Earl of Cumberland and 13th Baron Clifford, the Earldom of Cumberland passed to his brother and the barony should have devolved upon his only daughter, Lady Anne Clifford. Lady Anne and her uncle, Francis [Clifford], 4th Earl of Cumberland, both claimed the Barony of Clifford.

he mother claimed the Barony of Clifford on her behalf 1606 and again in 1628; the vast family estates and the hereditary Shrievalty of Westmorland were held by her uncle Francis, 4th Earl of Cumberland, from 1605 and did not come into her possession until the death of her cousin, the 5th Earl of Cumberland, in 1643
On her death the Barony of Clifford fell into abeyance for the first time between her first daughter by her first husband, Lady Margaret Tufton, Countess of Thanet, and her granddaughter Lady Alathea Compton, only surviving child of her second daughter by her first husband, Lady Isabella Compton, Countess of Northampton. On the death of Lady Alathea on 14 Oct 1678 the barony devolved upon the heir general.

The Barony of Clifford was held by the Earls of Thanet from 14 Oct 1678 until 30 Jul 1729, when on the death of Thomas [Tufton], 6th Earl of Thanet and 18th Baron Clifford, the barony fell into abeyance for the second time between his five daughters: Lady Katherine Watson, Viscountess Sondes; Lady Anne Cecil, Countess of Salisbury; Lady Margaret Coke, Countess of Leicester; Lady Mary Grey, Countess of Harold; and Lady Isabella Tufton.
