The Barony of Dacre was held by the 1st Earl of Sussex from 5 Oct 1674 until his death on 30 Oct 1715, when the Earldom of Sussex became extinct and the Barony of Dacre fell into abeyance between his two daughters, Lady Barbara Skelton and Lady Anne Lennard.  On the death in 1741 of the elder daughter without issue the barony devolved upon her younger sister,

he inherited the family estates in Essex, norfolk and Ireland on the death of his paternal grandfather in 1725. Lord Dacre had a son, Thomas, born Jan 1762, and a daughter Barbara, born July 1766, by a woman named FitzThomas. The children assumed the name of Barrett-Lennard by Royal Licence under the terms of their father's will. By this will Thomas, subject to Lady Dacre's life interest, succeeded to his father's estates in Essex, Norfolk and Ireland. These children were brought up at Belhouse by Lady Dacre as if they had been her own. In 1798, during the Napoleonic scare, Thomas raised and commanded a troop of yeomanry, for which services he was created a Baronet in 1801.
