entered the Royal Navy 1732; Lieut 1739; Capt 1742; distinguished himself in the naval battle off Cape Finisterre 1747; Governor of Newfoundland 1749-50; Member of Parliament for Saltash 1751-54, for Okehampton 1759-61, for Penryn 1762-68, for Northampton 1768-74 and for Westminster 1780-82; Rear-Admiral 1759; commanded a squadron which bombarded Le Havre 1759; Commander-in-Chief, Leeward Islands station 1761-63 ; reduced Martinique 1762 and took possession of St Lucia, Grenada and St Vincent; Vice-Admiral 1763; Governor of Greenwich Hospital 1765-70; Rear-Admiral of Great Britain 1771; Commander-in-Chief, Jamaica station 1771-74; lived in France 1775-78; Admiral of the White 1778; Commander-in-Chief, Leeward Islands and Barbados 1779; enroute to taking up this appointment in early in 1780 he defeated a Spanish squadron off Cape St Vincent, capture the Spanish Admiral and relieved Gibraltar, for which action he received the thanks of Parliament and was made a Knight of the Bath; fought an undecided action with the French off Martinique 1780 and seized the Dutch island of St Eustatius 1781; defeated the French at the battle "of the Saints" off the Leeward Islands 1782, for which he received the thanks of Parliament and his peerage, with an annuity of £2,000, which in 1793 was extended to his successors in the title
