The Viscountcy of Ranelagh was held by the 1st Earl of Ranelagh from 11 Dec 1677 until his death on 5 Jan 1711/2 when the Earldom of Ranelagh became extinct. The Viscountcy of Ranelagh became dormant and was not claimed until 1759, when Charles Wilkinson Jones, the 1st cousin twice removed of the 1st Earl of Ranelagh, established his claim to the title:
