suc. his father 19 Mar 1657/8 as 3rd Baronet of Netherby; Member of Parliament (Tory) for Cockermouth 1675-81 and for Cumberland 1685-87; Envoy Extraordinary to France 1682; Privy Councillor [E] 1685; Chancellor to the Queen Dowager 1685; Master of the Great Wardrobe 1685 ; Lord Lieutenant of Cumberland and Westmorland 1687; Secretary of State for the North 1688; cr. an English peer by letters patent dated at St Germain-en-Laye 21 Jan 1688/9 as Baron of Liddall, in the County of Cumberland, and Viscount Preston, in Amoundernesse in the County of Lancaster - this patent was held to be void by the House of Lords as the creation had taken place between the date of King James II's flight from England (11 Dec 1688) and the dated when Parliament declared (the House of Commons on 28 Jan 1688/9 and the House of Lords on 6 Feb 1688/9) that he had abdicated on that day; between May 1689 and Oct 1689 he was imprisoned in the Tower of London charged with treasonable activities; released on bail but again arrested and sent to the Tower of London; he was tried for treason on 16 Jan 1690/1, found guilty and condemned to death on 19 Jan 1690/1 but later pardoned
