By the provisions of the Lord Chancellor Transfer of Functions Order No 1640 entitled The Lord Chancellor (Transfer of Functions and Supplementary Provisions) (No 3) Order 2006 made on the 21st June 2006 in accordance with the provisions of sections 39, 140 and 143 of The Constitutional Reform Act 2005, the Office of Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain was separated from the Office of Speaker of the House of Lords and it has accordingly become necessary for the precedence of the Office of Speaker of the House of Lords, known as Lord Speaker, to be defined.

 

The Queen has been pleased by Royal Warrant bearing date the 4th July 2006 to declare that the rank and precedence of the Lord Speaker shall be so placed in order immediately after the Speaker of the House of Commons.
