On the death of the 3rd Viscount Lonsdale the Viscountcy of Lonsdale became extinct and the Baronetcy of Lowther (NS cr. c. 1638) passed to his second cousin and also greatnephew, James Lowther, of Mauds Meaburn, later 1st Earl of Lonsdale
