Quarterly:  1st and 4th, Gules a Fess checky Argent and Azure in chief three Mullets of the second;  2nd and 3rd, counter quartered, 1st and 4th, Azure a Fess between three Lozenges Or;  2nd and 3rd, Argent on a Chevron Sable an Otter's Head erased of the first, all within a Bordure embattled Gold

On 8 May 1633 John [Lindsay], 10th Lord Lindsay of the Byres, was created Earl of Lindsay, with remainder to him and his heirs male bearing the name and arms of Lindsay.  In Nov 1652 he succeeded his kinsman as 17th Earl of Crawford under the terms of the 15 Jan 1641/2 regrant of the Earldom of Crawford. The Earldom of Lindsay was held by the Earls of Crawford until 30 Jan 1808, when on the death of George [Lindsay], 22nd Earl of Crawford and 6th Earl of Lindsay, the Earldom of Crawford passed to Alexander [Lindsay], 6th Earl of Balcarres, and the Earldom of Lindsay became dormant. By a retrospective decision of the House of Lords on 5 Apr 1878, it was deemed to have been inherited by his eighth cousin once removed,
