Member of Parliament for Nottinghamshire 1624-25, 1640 and 1640-43; a zealous Royalist, he contributed largely to the garrisoning of the town of Newark-upon-Trent; he suffered financially under the Commonwealth, with his house at Averham being burnt to the ground and his estates sequestrated - these were only recovered with some difficulty by the payment of a fine of £5,000 (£377,800 in modern terms)
