entered the Royal Navy 1735;  served under Anson at the capture of Paita 1741;  Member of Parliament (Whig) for Chichester 1755-61, for Windsor 1761-80 and for Surrey 1780-82;  took the Island of Goree from the French 1759;  under Hawke at the defeat of the French Admiral, Conflans, 1759;  Col of Marines 1760-62;  a Groom of the Bedchamber 1761-65;  took part in the capture of Havana 1762;  Rear Admiral 1762;  a Lord of the Admiralty 1765-66;  Elder Brother of the Trinity House 1767;  Vice Admiral 1770;  Admiral of the Blue 1778;  allowed the French fleet to escape him at Ushant 1778, for which he was tried by a court-martial but acquitted;  Privy Councillor 1782;  First Lord of the Admiralty 1782-83 and 1783;  Master of the Trinity House 1782-86;  Admiral of the White 1782

On the death of the 1st Viscount Keppel the Viscountcy of Keppel became extinct.
