The Barony of Furnivall was held by the Earls of Shrewsbury from 17 Jul 1453 until 8 May 1616, when on the death s.p.m. of Gilbert [Talbot], 7th Earl of Shrewsbury, 12th and 11th Baron Furnivall, etc., the Earldom of Shrewsbury passed to his brother and heir male, but the Baronies of Furnivall, Talbot and Strange of Blackmere fell into abeyance between his three daughters: Mary, Countess of Pembroke, Elizabeth, Countess of Kent, and Alethea, Countess of Arundel. On the death of her last surviving sister on 7 Dec 1651 the Countess of Arundel became sole heir to her father:

suc. his father 17 Apr 1652 as 23rd or 16th Earl of Arundel and his paternal grandmother 24 May 1654 in the Baronies of Furnivall, Talbot and Strange of Blackmere; restored as 5th Duke of Norfolk 29 Dec 1660 by Act of Parliament with the original precedence of his ancestor, John [Howard], 1st Duke of Norfolk

The Barony of Furnivall was held by the Dukes of Norfolk from 29 Dec 1660 to 20 Sep 1777, when on the death s.p. of Edward [Howard], 9th Duke of Norfolk, 18th and 17th Baron Furnivall, etc., the Dukedom of Norfolk passed to his cousin and heir male, but the Baronies of Furnivall, Talbot, Strange of Blackmere, Mowbray and Segrave fell into abeyance between his nieces and coheirs or their issue as the heirs general. The two nieces were Winifred, Baroness Stourton (d. 15 Jul 1753) and Anne, Baroness Petre (d. 16 Jan 1787). Lady Petre was the great-great-grandmother of Bernard Henry Philip [Petre], 14th Baron Petre, in favour of whose only child the abeyance of the Barony of Furnivall was terminated in 1913:
