On the death of the 4th Earl of Effingham the Earldom of Effingham became extinct but the Barony of Howard of Effingham was inherited by his third cousin, Kenneth Alexander Howard, who succeeded as 11th Baron Howard of Effingham, and who was himself created Earl of Effingham in 1837.
