his father was an immensely wealthy Portuguese Jew who was able to obtain for his only son a Baronetcy at the age of 13 as well as several Parliamentary seats; educ. Eton College 1761-63; student, Lincoln's Inn 1762; Member of Parliament (Tory) for Cambridgeshire 1770-80, for Midhurst 1780-84, for Coventry 1784-96 and for Wallingford 1796-1802; FRS 1789; FSA 1789; took the name of Eardley in lieu of that of Gideon by Royal Licence 1789 even though his wife had a brother John Wilmot later Eardley-Wilmot, of Berkswell, co. Warwick, and in no way represented the Eardley family
On the death of the 1st Baron Eardley both the Baronetcy and Barony of Eardley became extinct.
