Member of Parliament for co. Cavan 1761-66; took an active part in the quelling of an insurrection in the north of Ireland 1764; KB 1764 ; suc. his first cousin once removed as 5th Baron Coote 10 Feb 1766; Deputy Quartermaster General of the Forces 1766-73; inherited the estates of Birtsmorton and Berrow, co. Worcester, from his cousin Lady Judith Coote 1771; Privy Councillor [I] 1774; Custos Rotulorum of co. Cavan 1780-1800; Joint Postmaster General of Ireland 1789-97

On the death of the 1st Earl of Bellomont the Earldom of Bellomont and Barony of Coote became extinct but the baronetcy passed to his illegitimate son, Charles Coote, under the special remainder in the 1774 patent.
