note

his claim to succeed to the Viscountcy was not allowed until 1814

On the death of the 6th Viscount Barnewall the Viscountcy of Barnewall became extinct.

The 1835 petition by Capt Thomas Barnewall to the House of Lords claiming the Viscountcy of Barnewall was never adjudicated on, but was spurious in that his claim that his great-grandfather. Col James Barnewall, was the sixth son of the 1st Viscount Barnewall was incorrect. The Colonel was in fact the second husband of the 1st Viscount's daughter, Mabel, Countess of Fingall. In the two deeds of settlement of the estates on the heirs male of the Barnewall family, dated 31 Dec 1661 and 21 Jul 1698, no mention is made of such a sixth son (James), or of his issue, who (had they existed) would doubtless have been placed in remainder to the estates before the very distant branches of the Barnewall family mentioned in those deeds.

The extinction of the viscountcy was acted upon in the 1836 creation of the Barony of Oranmore under the terms of the Act of Union.
