a zealous supporter of the Reformed Faith, known as "the good Lord"; a Lord of the Congregation 1559 ; took part in the occupation of Edinburgh 1560, and in negotiations with England for aid against the Queen Regent, for the expulsion of the French and the defence of the reformed religion 1559-60 ; he took part in the Battle of Prestonpans 1560; Privy Councillor [S] 1560; opposed the marriage of Queen Mary with Lord Darnley and was denounced as a rebel; fled to England and stayed there until 1566, when he returned to Scotland having received Darnley's promise of pardon and restoration; severely wounded at the Battle of Langside 1568 and supported the Earl of Morton, Regent of Scotland from 1572; an Auditor of the Exchequer 1580; Lieutenant of the West Marches 1586; a Commissioner to suppress Jesuits 1589/90

he settled in Ulster as an "undertaker" in 1611, being granted 3,000 acres in co. Tyrone; on 11 Mar 1613/4 he was sum. by writ to the Irish House of Lords with other Scottish and Irish peers; having ruined himself by extravagance, he sold his Scottish estate to his first cousin, Sir James Stewart of Killeith, and resigned to him the Barony of Ochiltree, which resignation was authorised by King James I & VI 1615; following this disposal he was given further large grants of land in co. Tyrone.

King's tax collector and Sheriff of Orkney and Shetland 1613-22; having bought from his cousin the lands of Ochiltree, and acquired the Barony by resignation with the consent of the Crown and a charter under the Great Seal 9 Jun 1615, he was held to have become Lord Ochiltree; Commissioner of Peace in co. Ayr 1616 ; attended the Convention at Edinburgh 1617 and the Assembly at Perth 1618; a Commissioner to try "offenders in doctrine, life or religion" 1619; attempted to found a colony on the Cape Breton coast 1619, but the colonists were surprised by the French two months after their arrival and he was taken prisoner; cr. a Baronet 1630 but the letters patent were cancelled before they had passed the Great Seal; accused the Marquess of Hamilton of treason, but when unable to prove the charges he was arrested and imprisoned in Blackness Castle for about 20 years; after his release he supported himself by practicing medicine
