Extinct Great Britain Marquessates

 

Berkhamsted, Marquess of (GB, 1726 - 1765) - the marquessate was held by the 1st Duke of Cumberland from its creation in 1726, when HRH Prince William Augustus, 2nd son of HRH Prince George, Prince of Wales (later King George II), was created Baron of Alderney, Viscount of Trematon, Earl of Kennington, Marquess of Berkhamsted and Duke of Cumberland, until the duke's death in 1765, when all his titles became extinct

Beverley, Marquess of (GB, 1708 - 1778) - the marquessate was held by the Dukes of Queensberry from 1708, when the 2nd Duke of Queensberry was created Baron Ripon, Marquess of Beverley and Duke of Dover, until 1778, when on the death of the 3rd Duke of Queensberry the British titles created in 1708 became extinct

Brackley, Marquess of (GB, 1720 - 1803) - the marquessate was held by the Dukes of Bridgewater from 1720, when the 4th Earl of Bridgewater was created Marquess of Brackley and Duke of Bridgewater, until 1803, when on the death of the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater the Marquessate of Brackley and the Dukedom of Bridgewater became extinct, and the Earldom of Bridgewater passed to a cousin

Buckingham, Marquess of (GB, 1784 - 1889)

 

Carnarvon, Marquess of (GB, 1719 - 1789) - the marquessate was held by the Dukes of Chandos from its creation in 1719, when the 1st Earl of Carnarvon was created Marquess of Carnarvon and Duke of Chandos, until 1789, when on the death of the 3rd Duke of Chandos all his titles became extinct

Clare, Marquess of (GB, 1715 - 1768) - the marquessate was held by the 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne from its creation in 1715, when the 1st Earl of Clare was created Marquess of Clare and Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, until his death in 1768 when all three titles became extinct

Ely, Marquess of (GB, 1726 - merged in the Crown 1760) - the marquessate was held by the Dukes of Edinburgh from its creation in 1726, when HRH Prince Frederick Lewis, 1st son of HRH Prince George, Prince of Wales (later King George II), was created Baron of Snowdon, Viscount of Launceston, Earl of Eltham, Marquess of the Isle of Ely and Duke of Edinburgh, until 1760, when his son HRH Prince George William Frederick, Prince of Wales, 2nd Duke of Edinburgh, etc. ascended the Throne as King George III and all his titles merged in the Crown

 

Malmesbury, Marquess of (GB, 1715 - forfeited 1729) - the marquessate was held by the 1st Duke of Wharton from 1718, when, as 2nd Marquess of Wharton and 2nd Marquess of Malmesbury, he was created Duke of Wharton, until his death in 1731, when all his titles, except for the Barony of Wharton, became extinct

Monthermer, Marquess of (GB, 1766 - 1790) - the marquessate was held by the 1st Duke of Montagu from 1766, when, as 4th Earl of Cardigan, he was created Marquess of Monthermer and Duke of Montagu, until his death in 1790 without surviving male issue, when the Marquessate of Monthermer and the Dukedom of Montagu became extinct, and the Earldom of Cardigan passed to his brother

 

Rockingham, Marquess of (GB, 1746 - 1782)

 

Titchfield, Marquess of (GB, 1716 - 1990) - the marquessate was held by the Dukes of Portland from 1716, when the 2nd Earl of Portland was created Marquess of Titchfield and Duke of Portland, until 1990, when the Marquessate of Titchfield and Dukedom of Portland became extinct, and the Earldom of Portland was inherited by a distant cousin descended from a descendant of the 1st Earl of Portland

 

Wharton, Marquess of (GB, 1715 - forfeited 1729) - the marquessate was held by the 1st Duke of Wharton from 1718, when, as 2nd Marquess of Wharton and 2nd Marquess of Malmesbury, he was created Duke of Wharton, until his death in 1731, when all his titles except for the Barony of Wharton, became extinct
