note

barrister, Lincoln's Inn 1730; King's Counsel 1742; Member of Parliament (Whig) for Boroughbridge 1742-56; Solicitor General 1742-54; Attorney General 1754-56; Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench 1756-88; Privy Councillor 1756; Chancellor of the Exchequer 1757 and 1767; Speaker of the House of Lords 1760 and 1770-71; on his death the Barony of Mansfield became extinct

The granting of two Earldoms with the same designation to one person is unique. Talking of the grant of the 1776 Earldom, The Complete Peerage says: "The strange limitation of the Earldom in 1776 was doubtless owing to a notion then prevalent that no British peerage granted even in remainder to a Scottish peer would enable such peer to sit in Parliament. This was founded on the absurd resolution passed by the House of Lords in 1711 as to the like impotency of a British peerage granted to a peer of Scotland, which resolution was rescinded in 1782. Accordingly, in 1792, the limitation of the Earldom was made with a direct remainder to the grantee's nephew, though a peer of Scotland." It should be mentioned that there is no such place as Mansfield in the county of Middlesex and was merely invented to distinguish it from the Earldom of "Mansfield in the County of Nottingham" created sixteen years previously.
