Lord Macdonald and his future wife had three children, two sons and one daughter, before their marriage (marked with asterisks above) and ten children born after the marriage;  Lord Macdonald being of Scottish domicile all of these children were legitimate according to the Law of Scotland, and the male issue in succession to the Scottish estates and honours.  This, however, was not the view taken at the time and probably in order to retain the Scottish estates in conjunction with the Irish Barony of Macdonald (to which being governed by considerations of Irish Law, only the sons born after the marriage of their parents were in remainder) steps were taken for settling the Bosville estates in Yorkshire upon the elder son born before the marriage, Alexander William Robert Macdonald later Bosville.  He took no steps to prove his legitimacy under Scots Law but by decree of the Court of Session on 4 Jun 1910, in an action of declarator, on the petition of his grandson, he was found to be the eldest lawful son of the 3rd Baron Macdonald and 11th Baronet of Sleat, and accordingly was de jure Sir Alexander William Robert Bosville, 12th Baronet of Sleat
