The Lordship of Herries of Terregles was held by the Earls of Nithsdale from 5 Oct 1667 until 20 Mar 1744, when William [Maxwell], 5th Earl of Nithsdale, 9th Lord Herries of Terregles, etc., was attainted, and all his titles were forfeit.  The descendants of the 5th Earl of Nithsdale were restored in blood in so far as the Lordship of Herries of Terregles was concerned by Act of Parliament in 1848 and on 23 Jun 1858 the House of Lords allowed the Lordship of Herries of Terregles to
