a strong supporter of King Charles; following the failure of an attempt to capture the leading Covenanters, Earl Ludovic was himself captured and imprisoned; he was released by the influence of his remote kinsman, John [Lindsay], 1st Earl of Lindsay, a descendant of the grandfather of the 1st Earl of Crawford, in return for which Earl Ludovic obtained a re-grant of the Earldom 15 Jan 1641/2 with remainder in default of heirs male of his own body to the Earl of Lindsay and the heirs male of his body, failing which to the collateral heirs male of Earl Ludovic; this arrangement removed the Lindsays of Spynie, Edzell and Balcarres from the immediate succession to the Earldom of Crawford, but the Balcarres branch did succeed to the Earldom of Crawford on the death of George [Crawford], 22nd Earl of Crawford and 6th Earl of Lindsay, in 1808; fought for the King at the Battles of Edgehill 1642, Lansdowne 1643 and Newbury 1643 ; following his defeat at the Battle of Marston Moor 1644 the Scottish Parliament declared the Earldom of Crawford to be forfeited and the Earl of Lindsay was "propelled and ratified" as Earl of Crawford; taken prisoner at the siege of Newcastle 1644, condemned to death but released after the Battle of Kilsyth 1645; escaped to Spain 1646 spent the rest of his life on the Continent
